Corneal Foreign Bodies

Great Comfort and Vision

A corneal foreign body is when a piece of metal, glass, sand, insect, etc. becomes either superficially stuck on the eye or embedded in the cornea.  Should you experience or even think that there may be something stuck in your eye, come to Precision Eye Care and let Dr. Lisa Januskey or Dr. Raymond Tran take a look.  They have the expertise and equipment necessary to find and remove anything that doesn’t belong in your eye.  Here are some rules of thumb to follow if you think you have a foreign body:

  • Don’t remove it yourself.  You’re more likely to cause more damage to your cornea if you do anything beyond attempt to flush your eye.
  • Don’t assume that there’s nothing there just because you can’t see anything.  Sometimes the foreign body is trapped underneath the eye lid.
  • Don’t wait to be evaluated.  Metallic foreign bodies can rust in the eye and rust would need to be removed.  Untreated foreign bodies can also lead to abrasions or scratches, infection, scarring, ulceration, ocular tissue death, and if it penetrates the globe, blindness.
  • Don’t assume that safety glasses have kept you safe.  We frequently see foreign bodies in people who were wearing their safety glasses at the time of the incident.
  • Don’t panic.  Just come right into our office and we’ll find a way to work you in and get you taken care of.
